Decoding Material Cycles and Supply/Value Chains of Lithium-ion Batteries

開催日時

Low-carbon technologies, especially lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and electric vehicles (EVs), have gained worldwide attention as pivotal tools to combat climate change and strategic sectors to underpin economic competitiveness. However, the widespread adoption of EVs brings potential resource bottlenecks and supply/value chain challenges due to their reliance on critical materials. Regarding resource bottlenecks, cobalt, nickel, and copper are often co-/by-produced and co- used or substitute in LIB chemistries. These coupled linkages create a complicated cobalt- nickel-copper nexus that challenges traditional single-metal approaches. To address this, we develop a dynamic coupled production-consumption model grounded in a dynamic material flow analysis (MFA) framework to simulate and optimize historical and future global cobalt, nickel, and copper cycles, simultaneously. In terms of supply/value chain challenges, the global LIB and related material supply/value chain is both physically and financially interconnected. Recent global pandemic, geopolitical realignment after Ukraine-Russia war and foreseeable decoupling between the West and China have reignited concerns about the reconfigurations and systematic instability of strongly interconnected supply chains. Therefore, we integrated trade-linked MFA and complex network analyses to uncover hidden interdependencies and systematic risks embedded in global LIB and related material supply/value chains.
