Courses

Department of Frontier Sciences for Advanced Environment;
Disaster Science

Disasters and the environment are closely interlinked, as exemplified by the intensification of storm and flood disasters associated with climate change; therefore, for the sustainability of human society, it is vital to build a resilient world with addressing environmental issues and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at the same time. Accordingly, with a view to spearheading the International Strategy for DRR, students gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of the Sendai Framework for DRR—such as ‘Pre-disaster DRR investment’ and ‘Build Back Better’ —based on Japan’s development experience, and acquire knowledge in disaster science. Students also deepen our practical understanding of how to optimize development with DRR investment as a whole society.
