Research contents

People live their lives belonging to various groups such as national, religious, and ethnic groups, which share common memories of the past. In particular, wars and conflicts are strongly remembered by them to form their group identities. These memories are shared by individual narratives, education, and the media, but the ways of being accepted depend on the groups and the social environment.
In this course, we will study the relationship between memory and the interaction of history, society, and culture in East Asia, relying on oral history and other fieldworks. Themes include collective and cultural memory, transgenerational transmission of trauma, East Asian community studies, ethnography of local communities, and modern and contemporary Chinese and Asian history. To conduct these studies, wide range of research methods that integrate multiple disciplines are welcomed.
