The 2nd International Symposium of Environmental Leader

December 15, 2011

※Digest version of the symposium.

The second international symposium was held on December 15, 2011 at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) in Vietnam. After the two keynote speeches, oral and poster presentations were given by students from Tohoku University and HCMUT. SERMSS students have diverse expertise from the fields of engineering to human security while speakers from HCMUT were experts and students of water resource engineering and the environment. In the end, this variety of fields made the symposium very substantial.
Two instructors of HCMUT, Associate Professor Huynh Thanh Son and Lecturer Luu Xuan Loc, were appointed as representatives of the Ho Chi Minh Office for the Environmental Leadership Program at the end of the symposium. Also Dean Tohji gave the certifi cate of the Environmental Leader Training Course (ELTC) to the speakers from HCMUT.
The welcome party after the symposium had a different but more casual atmosphere. Students and instructors of both universities enjoyed good food and conversation over their research fields, hobbies and diff erent cultures.
On December 16,SERMSS members went on a fi eld observation to the wastewater treatment plant in Ho Chi Minh City. While the city has been developing rapidly, many environmental problems such as wastewater treatment have been left unresolved. They visited the developing urban site and then the rural area where surface transportation is still the main form. Witnessing environmental problems in Vietnam that are diff erent from Japan’s, how did SERMSS students feel as future environmental leaders?
