Two things that left a strong impression on me is first that the JAXA has many research centers around the nation,
not only concentrated on high developed and populated cities but spread across the nation.
To know that in a small farming town of Kakuda exists a high tech research center for propulsion engines and the
prototype of a ram jet engine is a great example of distributed development in Japan.
On the other hand, to see a low technology equipment like the hydraulic ram on an advanced nation like Japan is very
surprising. As foreigners when we think of Japan we usually think of robots and high tech electronics; but to see an
operational simple equipment that uses no external power that can supply water in rural mountain areas are very enlightening.
Though simple in design and concept the hydraulic is unknown to me until this fieldwork. And considering the possible
application of this equipment on less developed countries where there are many rural high altitude areas with limited
electricity where the people need to fetch water and bring it back uphill; many potential areas and regions for application
may be considered to ease the lives of the people.
