TOHOKU UNIVERSITY DAY

Welcome to TOHOKU UNIVERSITY DAY

Tohoku University was founded as the third Japanese National University in 1907, located in the cultural and historical City of Sendai. It is built on the principles of “Research First”, “Open-Door”, and “Practice-oriented Research and Education”, and has contributed to human society by continuing its efforts to achieve innovation in the fields of research and education. With these achievements, Tohoku University is now striving to achieve its goal of becoming a world-class university. In order to achieve this objective, President Inoue formulated the action plan, “Inoue Plan 2007”. This plan places a high priority on the internationalization of education and research of Tohoku University by strengthening the global networks between Tohoku University and leading foreign universities.

In 2009, the Japanese government initiated the “Global 30 Program” to develop Japanese top universities as leading internationalization hubs which offer high-quality education and research to attract many international students and researchers from overseas. And Tohoku University won the program as one of the 13 universities and is working on implementing the program, involving the faculty members and administrative staff through the university.

Under the “Global 30 Program”, Tohoku University is currently planning to offer 15 courses in a variety of departments where students can obtain Bachelors, Masters and Doctors degrees entirely in English. In addition, a comprehensive support system is in place for international students providing support from pre-enrollment to post graduation and career assistance. Those students who meet the university’s requirements are also eligible to receive scholarships.

In order to introduce this “Global 30 Program”, as well as present further information on research and education at Tohoku University, we have decided to hold the “Tohoku University Day” in partnership with Institut Tecknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia.

ITB is one of the Indonesian research universities of excellence and Tohoku University’s Graduate School of Environmental Studies established its satellite course there in 2008 with the financial support of the Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (JAPEX). Based on this and other academic exchanges in research and education, Tohoku University and ITB concluded a university-level agreement in 2008. In the future, in addition to these partnerships in Indonesia, we hope to strengthen educational and research collaborations with other universities throughout Southeast Asia.

The “Tohoku University Day” is a two-day event to be held from March 18 to 19, 2010. On the first day, we will hold an opening ceremony to welcome visitors from distinguished universities and institutions throughout Southeast Asia. Following this we will hold a poster session to introduce major research achievements by Tohoku University faculty members, followed by a consultation session for prospective students and finally a reception. On the second day, we will give science seminars on the common theme of the “environment”, organized by the Graduate Schools of Environmental Studies, Engineering, Science, Agricultural Science, and Economics & Management. Discussions on topics such as air and water pollution control, climate change, environment and agriculture, and environment and development are being planned.

We regard this event as one of the first steps towards building educational and research platforms with top-class universities and institutions throughout Southeast Asia. We believe your participation will be vital in making this event a success. Further details of the event are given below. We very much look forward to seeing you at the event in Bandung.

TOHOKU UNIVERSITY

Tohoku University was founded at Sendai in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University. It was the third Imperial University in Japan, and comprised the College of Agriculture and College of Science.
Since its foundation. the university has been very progressive and given stimulus to the society. To give a few examples, it was the first Imperial University to admit applicants who had not finished regular preparatory courses; that is. it accepted graduates from Medicine and Technical Colleges (Kōtō Senmon Gakko) and holders of a certificate for secondary school teachers. It was also the first Japanese university to introduce coeducation. It presented university extension lecture to the public ahead of its time. And it conferred degrees to foreign graduates as far back as 1911, which means that Tohoku University opened its doors to foreign students even earlier than University of Tokyo, the oldest University in Japan.
