Dear faculty of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University, honored Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am delighted for the opportunity to be the graduate representative today. My name is Jiajie Wang, and I am graduating with a doctorate from the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (GSES), Tohoku University.

At first, on behalf of the entire graduate students, I would like to thank all of you, especially our most beloved Dean, Prof. Noriyoshi Tsuchiya, for celebrating this special day with us. Although celebration ceremony could not be held this year, our gratitude transcends physical distance.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the faculty of GSES, for the efforts you have made, and the distinguished views and opinions you have shared with us. Without your guidance, we could not reach this key milestone in our life journey.

Two or three years ago, we joined the big GSES family. We come from different regions and nationalities and began a new journey full of unknowns and uncertainties. This precious opportunity truly allowed us to have valuable and fruitful campus lives. During the years at GSES, we have been given opportunities to develop ourselves in academy and personality. We have been encouraged to think, reflect and create, both inside and outside the campus. We were confused, frustrated, but now we have learned to overcome challenges and groomed good problem-solving skills. We thank GSES from the bottom of our hearts, for all the experiences we gained, and skills we learnt. The education we received in GSES is the foundation upon which we build the rest of our lives.

We feel very proud to be students of GSES, Tohoku University. GSES is a great place that aims to address the large question of what a sustainable society should look like, while searching for solutions to specific environmental problems. As students of the GSES, to achieve this common goal, we all spent a lot of time and efforts in various research fields, such as natural science, social science, and the humanities. Meanwhile, we are also trying to move beyond the conventional disciplinary boundaries of these research fields through mutual learning and collaboration. We are extremely grateful to every professor, researcher and technician for guiding us into the field of scientific research and cultivating our interest in doing research. Even though we are graduating today, our research passion will continue.

Every fascinating journey begins with dreams. My dream of academic life began seven years ago when I was a master’s student in China. I knew that Japan, especially Tohoku University has solid fundamental research and advanced techniques in Environmental science and engineering, a fact that sparked my interest in studying in Japan. In 2016, I fortunately received the chance to study in GSES, Tohoku University, marking the successful realization of an academic dream of me. In these three years, with the help from faculty in GSES, not only have I successfully completed GSES’s academic requirements but also had the opportunity to pursue further wisdom in Japan. I look forward to making my own small contribution to Environmental studies.

Today, we are going to graduate, however, this is not the end of our learning, we will continue to learn and discover. From now on, we will start a new journey, some students will stay to continue their study here, and some will enter the workplace. No matter where we are, the years we enjoyed in GSES will be one of the most important parts of our lives. We will never forget the Momiji in Aobayama campus, the cherry blossoms in Katahira campus, the fireworks we watched in Kawauchi campus, Imoni party along the river, delightful open campus, delicious food in cafeteria, and the most important thing, we are always students of GSES, Tohoku University.

Finally, thank you again to the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University for all that you have given us over the past few years, and I wish all of my fellow graduates the best of luck as we pursue our dreams.

Thank you!
