"Ecology of hydrocarbon degrading microbial communities in coastal environments"

概要 Microbial communities, in marine coastal environments, are frequently
exposed to varying levels of oxygen. While the aerobic and anaerobic biodegra-
dation of hydrocarbons is well documented, little is known as yet about degradation within the tran-
sitional zone from oxic to anoxic conditions.
Applying different strategies of experimental ecology, our studies allowed to decipher the ecology of
hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities. The oxic/anoxic oscillations influence microbial assem-
blages and hydrocarbon degradation, which was favoured by oxygenation after a period of anoxia.
Particularly, the study highlights the adaptation and the functional redundancy of microbial communities
involved in hydrocarbons degradation.
Better understanding the behaviour of microbial communities in oxic/anoxic oscillating conditions is
essential to build strategies for managing microbial resources for bioremediation processes in marine
Prof. Robert Duran Professor in Environmental Molecular Microbiology at the University of Pau, Robert has more
than 25 years experience in environmental microbiology and molecular microbiology research. His research focuses
on microbial ecology and diversity, with an emphasis on extreme, polluted or estuarine ecosystems. He employs a
wide-range of techniques (from geochemistry to metatranscriptomics) to address fundamental and practical issues.
Relevant recent discoveries include the characterization of the taxonomic and functional microbial-diversity in ext-
reme and contaminated ecosystems: behavior of sulfate reducing bacteria populations in acid mine drainage and
microbial mats according to the fluctuation of environmental parameters, the diversity of ring hydroxylating dioxy-
genases in polluted microbial mats. He has supervised 25 masters, 32 PhD students and 8 post-docs. He has been
PI for 23 projects including 11 international projects.
